How waterproof is my Samsung smartphone?

More and more Samsung smartphones are waterproof. But how waterproof is each model really? This is indicated with the IP certification. Waterproof Samsung smartphones have a high certification, generally speaking. This means they can stay underwater for a longer time period. In this article, we'll explain how waterproof your Samsung smartphone really is.

Water resistance per model

Model Water resistant?
Samsung Galaxy Note series Yes
Samsung Galaxy S series Yes
Samsung Galaxy Z series Yes
Old Samsung Galaxy A series (numbers lower than 10) No (excluding the A3 (2017), A5 (2017), A7 (2017), and the A8 (2018))
New Samsung Galaxy A series (numbers higher than 10) No (except the A33, A552, A52s, A53, and A72)
Samsung Galaxy M series No
Samsung Galaxy J series No
Samsung Galaxy XCover series Yes

How do you check if your smartphone is waterproof?

First, check our product page or the manual to see if your device has an IP certification. You'll recognize the certification by the letters 'IP' followed by 2 digits. The second digit indicates the water resistance of your smartphone. IP67 and IP68 are the most common IP certifications, as are they with Samsung. Devices with an IP67 certification survive at up to 1m depth for about 30 minutes. A smartphone with IP68 survives at a depth up to 1.5m for the same duration. Keep in mind that sea water and pool water always damage a smartphone. So don't just jump into the sea or pool with your phone.

High-end devices (S, Note, and Z series)

Samsung Galaxy S, Z, and Note waterproof

From the Samsung Galaxy S7, all Samsung Galaxy S series devices have an IP68 certification. This means that all these smartphones can survive underwater at 1.5m depth for about 30 minutes. All models have this certification. So don't panic if you drop your S7 Edge, S21 FE, or S22 Ultra in the sink. All Samsung Galaxy Note and foldable Galaxy Z smartphones have a high IP certification. With a high-end Samsung device, you'll never have to worry about water.

Samsung Galaxy A, M, and J series

Not a single smartphone from the Samsung Galaxy J or M series is water-resistant. The same holds for most Samsung Galaxy A models, except for a couple of models. These models have an IP67-certification, which means they can survive underwater at 1m depth for about 30 minutes. This is the case for the following models:

  • Samsung Galaxy A3 (2017)
  • Samsung Galaxy A5 (2017)
  • Samsung Galaxy A7 (2017)
  • Samsung Galaxy A8 (2018)
  • Samsung Galaxy A33
  • Samsung Galaxy A52 and A52s
  • Samsung Galaxy A53
  • Samsung Galaxy A72

Samsung Galaxy Xcover

Samsung Galaxy XCover models are ruggedized smartphones. That means they can withstand extreme conditions. That's why these smartphones have an IP68-certification. These smartphones can stay underwater at 1.5m depth for about 30 minutes and still work. They're also dust proof and won't break in case of a fall. Useful, if you work at a construction site, for example.
