What's Dynamic Island and what can you use it for?
What's Dynamic Island?
The Dynamic Island is the small menu at the top of your screen that you use to control your iPhone. Older iPhone models had the notch in this spot, where the selfie camera and sensors are. You couldn't do anything else with it. Now, you can see notifications in this menu and control apps with it. When you watch a video, the menu will collapse and you won't see it anymore.
How does Dynamic Island work?
In addition to reading notifications, you can also control apps via Dynamic Island after you've opened the app. When you set a timer, you can quickly control it by pressing it extra firmly for example. A small window will open in which you can stop or pause the timer. Do you prefer to open the app? Quickly tap the Dynamic Island. This also works with Maps, Spotify, and incoming calls, for example. Dynamic Island is extra useful if you multitask a lot, because apps remain quickly accessible.
Which apps and functions work with Dynamic Island?
Not all apps from the App Store are suitable for Dynamic Island already. We expect other developers to make apps compatible with Dynamic Island in the future too. At the moment, you can control the following important apps and functions with Dynamic Island:
-
Functions: Face ID, Apple Pay, AirPlay, SharePlay, and AirDrop
-
Apps: Maps, Music, Timer, Spotify, Whatsapp, and Skype
