What determines the speed of a tablet?

The speed of a tablet is determined by various factors. The most important ones are the processor and the RAM. Fast tablets often have multiple processor cores and a lot of RAM, for example. In this article, you can read more about the components that determine the speed of a tablet.

The processor

The processor

One of the components that determines the speed of the tablet is the processor. A processor has multiple processor cores. The processor divides tasks over multiple cores. This means that a processor with more cores can perform tasks more efficiently. You'll usually see a number behind a processor. The higher this number, the newer and faster the chip often is. So an Apple A14 chip is more powerful and faster than the older A12 chip.

RAM

You mostly notice the affect of the RAM when you multitask and switch between various apps. The RAM temporarily saves files on open apps. If you open a different app and then go back, the app is still open on the page you were using when you closed it. The higher the RAM, the more tasks the tablet can carry out at the same time without losing speed. Most tablets have 4 to 6GB RAM. Very fast tablets have 8 or 16GB.

The version of the operating system

You might have the fastest tablet, but it's important for the tablet to have the latest version of the operating system as well. Samsung and Lenovo tablets run on Android, for example. Apple iPad models run on iPadOS. Don't forget to update your apps if a new version is available. So, make sure your device is up to date. That's the only way to make sure it functions optimally.

Different categories at Coolblue

At Coolblue, we distinguish various categories to determine how fast a tablet is and what you can use it for. A tablet under the category 'Good' is also suitable for tasks you'll see under 'Mediocre' and 'Standard'.

  • Mediocre: children's tablets aren't fast, so they're only suitable for small children.
  • Standard: you can play light games like Candy Crush and Wordfeud on it.
  • Good: you can watch YouTube videos and update your social media.
  • Very good: suitable for 3D games and multitasking.
  • Excellent: you can easily use demanding apps, such as Adobe for photo and video editing.
