3 tips to connect your mesh system to your modem

You want to reach the highest internet speeds everywhere in you home with your new mesh routers. We'll give you 3 tips to set up your mesh routers optimally in this article. Think of turning off the WiFi of your provider and also the settings you have to adjust in the modem.

Connect your mesh system to your modem

Setting up a mesh network Orbi

Sometimes you run into problems with the modem from your internet provider when you're setting up your mesh system. Because they don't work together well, your WiFi isn't optimal. With these tips, you can solve a lot of these problems. Your provider can help you with all 3 tips.

  • Tip 1. Turn off the WiFi on your modem
  • Tip 2. Set up your modem as a bridge
  • Tip 3. Create a DMZ

Tip 1: turn off the WiFi from your provider

Speed test

With a WiFi mesh system, you provide your entire house with WiFi. The modem from your provider also transmits a WiFi signal by default. This interferes with your mesh system, so your new WiFi signal isn't as strong. The reception can be worse and the speed can be lower. You no longer need the WiFi network from your provider, so turn it off on your modem. Your internet provider can help you with this.

Tip 2: set up your modem as a bridge

Modem as a bridge

Is the internet via your mesh network unstable or doesn't it work at all? It's possible that the built-in router of your modem is getting in the way. You can set up your modem as a bridge to turn off the router. Your provider also does this for you. That way, the modem will only translate your internet signal to something that your mesh system can understand.

Extra tip 3: create a DMZ

Game with DMZ

Do you have a bad connection or a connection that doesn't work at all, especially when you're gaming? Your modem isn't transferring all of the internet packets to your mesh system. You can can create a DMZ for this. This allows your modem to forward all internet traffic to your WiFi system right away. Packets from your games are properly transferred to your PC or console, for example. You can set up a DMZ in your modem yourself. Since the process is different for each provider, your provider can help you with this as well.
