How do you transfer data to your Synology NAS from Windows?

After creating a shared folder, you'll want to be able to access it from your Windows computer in order to move files easily. Using the following steps, you'll be able to add those shared folders to your explorer.

What do you need to add your shared folder to your Windows computer?

  • A Windows computer that's connected to the same network as the NAS
  • Your NAS's name (you should have created this when installing the DSM operating system)
  • The name of the volume you created (you can find this out by opening storage management in DSM and going to volume management)
  • The name of the shared folder you want to connect (for example: 'Movies').

Step 1: activate the Windows file service

For starters, it's important that the NAS should know it can communicate with Windows. To do this, a few small steps are required:

  • Go to the NAS's web interface.
  • Open the control panel.
  • Go to 'File services > Win/Mac/NFS'.
  • Check the box 'Enable Windows file service'.

Step 2: connect the NAS to the explorer

  1. Open your explorer on your Windows computer.
  2. At the top, select 'Create network connection'.
  3. On the next screen, choose a letter you want to assign to the folder.
  4. In the text field below, you'll be able to enter the location of the shared folder. You do this by entering the following: \Name of your NAS\Name of the volume\Name of the shared folder This might look like this: \DiskStation\Volume1\Movies
  5. For your convenience, check the box 'Reconnect at logon'. If you don't, you'll need to complete these steps again manually whenever you restart your computer. Press 'OK'.

You can now move files from and to your NAS just like you would between 2 regular disks on your computer.
