How do you solve skin problems with your IPL treatment?

Some people experience skin problems during or after an IPL treatment. Your skin becomes red, hot, or you feel a stinging sensation. In most cases, these sensations are completely normal and disappear on their own. If they don't, you can adjust the light intensity and check if you're using the IPL device correctly. We'll explain exactly how to do this.

No one likes skin problems, so you'll want to solve them as quickly as possible. We'll give you a couple of tips, so you can use your IPL device safely and comfortably.

  • Tip 1. Pause the treatments.
  • Tip 2. Check the light intensity.
  • Tip 3. Check if you've removed the hair properly.
  • Tip 4. Check what areas you can use the IPL device on.
  • Tip 5. Do the skin problems persist? Contact your doctor.

Tip 1: pause the treatments

Storage pouch IPL

Do you feel a hot or stinging sensation on your skin during or after your IPL treatment? This is normal and it'll disappear after a couple of seconds or a minute or so. A red skin is also a normal reaction that can lasts anywhere from a couple of minutes to a couple of hours. Is the hair follicle swollen or red? This should also disappear in 2 to 3 days. In all cases, the best solution is to give your skin some rest and pause the treatments until the redness and/or swelling has disappeared.

Tip 2: check the light intensity

Check IPL light intensity

Is your skin red, swollen, and/or do you feel a hot or stinging sensation during or after your treatment? Lower the light intensity on the iPL device. Test the new setting on a small area of your skin after the redness and/or swelling has disappeared completely. A lower intensity is less taxing for your skin and often feels a lot more comfortable. If the area of your skin you tested on looks good after 24 hours, you can continue your IPL treatments.

Tip 3: check if you've removed the hair properly

Remove hair ladyshave

Does your skin feel painful or sensitive during or after the treatment? Check if all of the areas you've treated with IPL are completely free from hair. Do you still see some hairs? Remove these with a shaver blade or ladyshave before you continue your treatment. If you don't remove them properly, the light from the IPL device will burn the hairs. This causes a burning and sometimes painful sensation.

Tip 4: check what areas you can use the IPL device on

An IPL device is unsuitable for a couple of areas on the body. Check if you're using the IPL device on an area that's suitable for IPL hair removal. For women, the areas that aren't suitable for light-based hair removal are the inner labia, anus, nipples, areolae, lips, birthmarks, freckles, tattoos, piercings, nostrils, around the eyes, and eyebrows. The same goes for men, along with the entire face, the neck, areas with beard growth, and the genitals.

Tip 5: contact your doctor

Does your skin still feel painful and sensitive after you've used the tips above? Does the redness not disappear after a couple of hours and the swelling after a couple of days? Stop using the IPL device. Contact your doctor and discuss if IPL is the right hair removal method for you.
