How do you solve issues with your electric toothbrush?

Problems that frequently occur with electric toothbrushes are a loud noise, weakening brushing power, or a toothbrush that suddenly won't turn on. We'll explain how you can solve these problems. For example, you can check if your brush attachment is properly attached to your toothbrush, make sure the Easy-start function is turned off on Philips models, and keep your toothbrush nice and clean.

Solve problems with your electric toothbrush

Do you hear a loud or strange noise during brushing, does the brushing power weaken, or does your electric toothbrush refuse to turn on at all? In this article, we'll discuss the following problems:

  • Brush attachment doesn't click into place or is too loose.
  • Brush attachment doesn't rotate properly or not at all.
  • Toothbrush makes a strange sound.
  • Toothbrush doesn't charge or runs out of battery quickly.
  • Brushing power weakens.

Brush attachment doesn't click into place or is too loose

Brush attachments
  1. Thoroughly clean the toothbrush and the inside and outside of the brush attachment and remove any toothpaste residue.
  2. Does the brush attachment still refuse to click into place? Buy a new brush attachment. Make sure you buy the original brush attachments from your toothbrush brand. These fit the best.
  3. Check if you're buying the right brush attachment for your toothbrush model. Oral-B iO brush attachments only fit on iO toothbrushes, for example.

Brush attachment doesn't rotate properly or not at all

Brush attachment doesn't rotate
  1. Remove the brush attachment from the toothbrush. Turn on the toothbrush and check if the upper pin of the toothbrush is moving.
  2. Is it not moving at all or just a little bit? Remove any toothpaste residue from the toothbrush surrounding the metal pin and clean the on/off button with a moist cloth.
  3. Fully charge the toothbrush by placing it on the charger for at least 24 hours.
  4. Turn on the toothbrush and check if the metal pin is moving. Is it not moving and is the toothbrush covered by the warranty? Contact our Customer Service.
  5. Is the metal pin moving? Check if the brush attachment is properly cleaned on the inside and outside and remove any toothpaste residue.
  6. Place the brush attachment on the toothbrush. Does it still refuse to rotate? We recommend you buy a new original brush attachment.

Toothbrush makes strange sound

Brush attachments
  1. Remove the brush attachment from the toothbrush and check if the toothbrush still makes the same sound.
  2. Do you still hear the sound? Fully charge the toothbrush by placing it on the charger for at least 24 hours.
  3. Turn on the toothbrush and check if it still makes the sound. Is the sound still there and is the toothbrush covered by the warranty? Contact our Customer Service.
  4. Do you only hear the sound when you use the brush attachment? Remove the brush attachment, clean it on the inside and outside, and remove any toothpaste residue.
  5. Properly attach the brush attachment to the toothbrush and turn on the toothbrush.
  6. Still hear the sound? Replace your brush attachment.

Toothbrush doesn't charge or runs out of battery quickly

Charge toothbrush
  1. Clean the toothbrush and charger according to the instructions in the manual and remove any toothpaste residue.
  2. Place the toothbrush on the included charger and make sure it makes contact with the charger. If you have a magnetic charger or charging glass, makes sure you place the toothbrush right in the middle.
  3. Charge the toothbrush for at least 24 hours. Make sure the charger isn't placed on a metal surface. It's possible that you don't see a charging indicator light on the handle. That's not a problem.
  4. Remove the toothbrush from the charger once it's fully charged. Next, check if the toothbrush works properly.
  5. Does your toothbrush run out of battery quickly? Make sure you only charge the toothbrush when the battery is completely empty. That way, you increase the battery life.
  6. Does your toothbrush refuse to charge and is the purchase covered by the warranty? Contact our Customer service.

Brushing power weakens

Brushing modes

General solutions

  1. Check if you're using the right brushing mode. That's because the brushing power is different for each mode. For example, the gentle brushing mode brushes your teeth more gently than the intense mode or the mode for whiter teeth. Do you want to brush your teeth thoroughly? Avoid the gentle brushing modes.
  2. Is the brushing power not as strong as you're used to? Fully charge the toothbrush.
  3. Does this not solve the problem? Check the brush attachment. Clean it on the inside and outside and try again. If this doesn't work, replace the brush attachment.
  4. Does the problem remain and is the toothbrush covered by the warranty? Contact our Customer Service.
Sonicare Prestige

Philips Sonicare EasyStart function

Do you have a Philips Sonicare toothbrush and do you want to brush with full power? Turn off the EasyStart function, because the toothbrush uses this function to build up the intensity during the first 14 brushing sessions. You can turn off the EasyStart function as follows:

  1. Place the toothbrush on the charger first.
  2. Next, press and hold the on/of button while the toothbrush is placed on the charger. You'll hear a beep after 2 seconds.
  3. Release the on/off button and the EasyStart function is disabled. You can now test the brushing power of the toothbrush.
