When can you place a freezer in the basement?
Minimum ambient temperature
The minimum ambient temperature of a freezer determines whether or not you can place the appliance in the basement or garage. This also depends on the energy label. It shows you the minimum and maximum ambient temperature for a freezer. For example, a model with the climate class SN-T works well in rooms temperatures between 10°C and 43°C. Whether a freezer can withstand even colder temperatures depends on the insulation of the appliance. Models with NoFrost are better insulated, for example.
What climate classes are there?
Minimum temperature (Celsius) | Maximum temperature (Celsius) | ||
---|---|---|---|
N | 16 | 32 | |
ST | 16 | 38 | |
T | 16 | 43 | |
SN | 10 | 32 | |
SN-T | 10 | 43 |
Too cold
If you place a freezer in a room with temperatures that are too low or too high, the appliance will have more difficulty freezing. It'll result in spoiled food and a broken appliance in the end. That's why you shouldn't place a freezer with a 10°C minimum ambient temperature in a basement or garage with winter temperatures of 0°C or lower.
10°C or warmer
Doesn't it get colder than 10° in your garage or basement? That means that the room is insulated. A freezer with an ambient temperature of at least 10°C is suitable for this. This is a model with the climate class SN, SN-T, or SN-ST. You can find the climate class on the product page of the freezer, in the manual, and on the type plate in the freezer.
0°C or colder
Do you have an uninsulated basement or does your garage get very cold? We recommend a freezer with a -15°C ambient temperature. Even if the temperature outside is below freezing, these freezers will continue to work. There's no official climate class for this, just as there's no official climate class for 0°C. Even so, appliances with NoFrost or SmartFrost may be suitable.
Determine the minimum temperature yourself
To determine which freezer your basement or garage is suitable for, measure the minimum temperature in that room. You can do this by hanging up a thermometer. Check how cold it gets on a cold, wintery day.
