How much energy and water does a washing machine consume?

You have an energy-efficient washing machine with an A energy label or higher. If you want to know how much energy a washing machine uses, check the energy label. Since 1 March 2021, there's a new label that indicates the energy and water consumption. This way, you know how energy-efficient the washing machine is and how much you pay each year. You can read about the average consumption and how much you save with an energy-efficient washing machine here.

Energy consumption on energy label

The energy label states how much kWh (kilowatt hours) the washing machine uses per 100 cycles. The European Union bases this on a full, half-full, and quarter-full drum. The EU calculated the consumption based on the Eco 40-60 cycle. A household runs 220 cycles per year on average. That's why we multiply the 100 cycles of the annual consumption by 2.2. Do you want an energy-efficient washing machine? Choose a washing machine with an A energy label or higher. Your energy costs are the lowest at a € 0.30 rate per kWh.

Energy savings after 10 years

You want to know how much an energy-efficient washing machine saves over 10 years. If you buy a washing machine with an A energy label, you save an average of € 22 per year compared to a washing machine with an E energy label. After 10 years, you've saved an average of € 220 on your energy bill. That's why it's smart to buy an energy-efficient washing machine.

You can also find the water consumption on the energy label. This indicates how much water the washing machine uses per cycle for the Eco 40-60 cycle. Just like the energy consumption, the water consumption is calculated based on an average of 220 cycles per year. This way, you get an idea of the costs. The average costs are based on a rate of € 0.0014 per liter. Keep in mind that the consumption can differ per energy label. Each washing machine can have different water-saving technologies.

To save even more on your energy costs, buy an energy-efficient washing machine and dryer. This way, you save energy costs with both appliances. With the most energy-efficient set, you save up to € 220 with your washing machine and up to € 1150 with your dryer. In total, you'll save € 1370 over their lifespan. This is good for your wallet, but also for the environment and your clothes. The lower drying temperature of the dryer ensures your laundry stays in good condition for longer.
