In March 2021, Samsung released the Galaxy A52. This smartphone is a step up from the Samsung A42, another mid-range device. With the Samsung A52, you mostly get a better screen and a better camera. In this comparison, we'll have a look at all similarities and differences between these smartphones.

New: the Samsung Galaxy A54

The successor to the Samsung Galaxy A53 is the A54, which has been released by Samsung. As a result, the Samsung Galaxy A53 is less easily available. The Samsung A54 is faster than its predecessor, thanks to the larger RAM and more powerful processor.

On top of that, you see a lot of detail thanks to the Full HD resolution. The screen has a 90Hz refresh rate. This is 1.5x faster than other smartphones in this price range. Thanks to the high refresh rate, movements like scrolling through your timeline look smooth.

Samsung A42: 6.6-inch HD screen with 60Hz refresh rate

The 6.6-inch screen of the Samsung A42 is slightly larger than that of the A52s. So this smartphone is also hard to control with one hand. On top of that, it won't fit in every pocket easily. On this HD screen, you see noticeably less detail than on the Full HD screen of the A52s. The refresh rate is 60Hz. This is normal for a smartphone in this price range, but not as fast as the screen of the Samsung A52s.

You can take beautiful photos with the cameras of the Samsung A52s. The 64-megapixel standard camera even performs well in low light. As a result, you still see details and colors. The Samsung Galaxy A42 only has a 5G version. This means you'll always benefit from the highest internet speed in the next years. So this device also has the Snapdragon 750G processor which supports 5G. The 4GB RAM is slightly smaller than that of the A52. As a result, switching between different apps can be a little slower. But in practice, this won't be very noticeable. The Samsung A42 also has 128GB storage which you can expand with a memory card of up to 1TB.

The Samsung A52s has a large 4500mAh battery. With average use, you'll make it to the end of the day without charging. With a 25W Samsung charger, you can fully charge this device in just over an hour. The charger in the box isn't quite as fast. You need to purchase the 25W charger separately.

Samsung A42: 5000mAh, but slower charging

The 5000mAh battery of the Samsung Galaxy A42 is much larger. As a result, you can use the device longer without having to charge it. With average use, the battery lasts just over 1.5 days. Charging is a little slower than with the A52s though. With the included 15W charger, it takes 1.5 to 2 hours to fully charge the battery.

Out of the box, the Samsung A52s comes with the operating system Android 11. You'll receive at least 3 large Android updates. This means you're assured of the latest versions of the operating system up to Android 14. You'll also receive a security update at least every quarter until August 2025. This means you can be sure your device is as secure as possible until then.

Samsung A42 security

Samsung A42: Android 10, security updates until October 2024

The Samsung Galaxy A42 is a few months older than the A52s. This means the device still has Android 10 by default. Your device will receive 2 large updates up until Android 12. So you don't have the latest Android features for as long on this smartphone as you do on the A52s. You'll receive a security update at least every quarter until October 2024.

Conclusion

In terms of processing power, the Samsung A52s and A42 are close to each other. But in every other area, the A52s offers more luxury. For example, you can take better photos, even in low light. Another big difference is in the screen. On the A52s, you'll see more details of your movies, series, and photos. The battery of the A42 lasts longer, but charging it takes half an hour longer. The A52s also provides software support for half a year longer.
