Compare Philips Sonicare electric toothbrushes

You've made your decision. Your next toothbrush will be a Philips Sonicare. But how do you decide which Sonicare toothbrush is best for you? And what's the difference between a Prestige, a DiamondClean, and a DiamondClean Smart? In this article, you'll find an overview of the various Philips toothbrushes. That way, you can easily find out which toothbrush suits your needs best.

Prestige, DiamondClean Smart, DiamondClean, and ProtectiveClean

Brushing modes

Brushing modes Philips Sonicare Prestige

Prestige: automatic intensity

The Philips Sonicare Prestige works with the SenseIQ technology. This allows the toothbrush to measure the pressure, your brushing motions, duration, and where you brush up to 100 times per second. With this information, the toothbrush adjusts the intensity. The advantage of this is that you always use the right brushing mode and brush your teeth effectively. If you prefer to select the brushing mode yourself, you can choose from 5 settings. There's a mode for whiter teeth, one for sensitive teeth, a massage mode, an intense move, and a standard brushing mode.

Philips DiamondClean brushing modes

DiamondClean Smart and DiamondClean: 4 modes

Both models don't have SenseIQ technology. You can adjust the toothbrush to your teeth and preferences. You can do this with the 4 different brushing modes. There's a mode for whiter teeth, a massage mode, an intense mode, and a standard brushing mode.

Philips ProtectiveClean brushing modes

ProtectiveClean: 2 to 3 modes

Compared to other series, the ProtectiveClean series has the least brushing modes. Every ProtectiveClean toothbrush does have a standard brushing mode for daily brushing. Some models also have a brushing mode for whiter teeth. The ProtectiveClean 6100 has 3 brushing modes, one for whiter teeth, a massage mode, and a standard mode.

Connection with smartphone

Philips Sonicare Prestige smartphone app

Prestige: 3D mouth map

While brushing, you can check the pressure, brushing motion, and duration in the accompanying smartphone app. Thanks to the 3D mouth map, you can also check where you've brushed and where you still need to brush. In addition, you can see your progress per day, per month, and per year. Based on this, you get useful tips to learn how to brush better and work towards healthy teeth without cavities. If you don't have your phone on hand while you brush, the app still stores your data.

3D mouth map in app

DiamondClean Smart: 3D mouth map

Just like the Prestige, you can connect the DiamondClean Smart to the Philips Sonicare app. On the mouth map in the app, you can see where you've brushed, which parts you've skipped, and what your problem areas are. In addition, you can see how long you have to continue brushing. And you get a warning when you scrub or brush with too much pressure. Thanks to this feedback, you can work towards healthier teeth. Just like with the Prestige.

Smartphone app Philips DiamondClean

DiamondClean: no mouth map

Unlike the Prestige and DiamondClean Smart, you won't find a mouth map in the DiamondClean app. That means that you can't see where you're brushing properly and which parts you're skipping. You can see how long you still have to brush and when you brush with too much pressure, so you can prevent damage to your gums. The app also tracks how often you brush. Based on all this information, you get a personal progress report with useful tips and feedback to keep your teeth healthy.

Pressure sensor

Prestige and DiamondClean Smart: vibration, light signal, and app

The Prestige and DiamondClean Smart models both have a pressure sensor and a scrubbing sensor. The pressure sensor indicates when you brush your teeth and gums with too much pressure. This helps prevent receding gums. The scrubbing sensor warns you when you brush back and forth a lot with too much pressure. You can see the warnings in the app. The sensors also ensure that the handle vibrates and that you see a light signal on the light ring below the handle as a warning.

Pressure sensor Philips DiamondClean

DiamondClean: vibration and app

Do you brush your teeth and gums with too much pressure? You'll get a warning in the accompanying app and will feel a light vibration on the handle. Unlike the Prestige and DiamondClean Smart, the DiamondClean doesn't have a light ring. So you won't get a light signal.

Philips ProtectiveClean pressure sensor

ProtectiveClean: vibration

The pressure sensor of the ProtectiveClrean models provides a light vibration of the handle when you brush with too much pressure. You can't connect the toothbrush to a smartphone, so you won't get notifications in the app. The toothbrush also doesn't have a light ring.

Design and accessories

Philips Prestige

Prestige: sleek design and luxurious accessories

The Philips Sonicare Prestige includes an all-in-one brush attachment, a luxurious rechargeable travel pouch, and a charging dock. This charging dock also has a more luxurious look than the charging docks of other series. The toothbrush is 18mm shorter than the DiamondClean, so it's more compact as well. The Prestige comes in a classic shade of dark blue and a bright champagne color. The only visible button is the on/off button. If you want to switch brushing modes manually, press the hidden button under the indicator lights.

Philips DiamondClean

DiamondClean Smart and DIamondClean

Both the DiamondClean Smart and DiamondClean include 2 brush attachments, a charging glass, a rechargeable travel pouch, and a charging dock. So you can charge your toothbrush in 3 different ways. You can choose from 2 colors, white or black. The toothbrush has 2 buttons, the on/off button and the button to switch brushing modes.

Philips ProtectiveClean

ProtectiveClean

Some ProtectiveClean series models include a charging dock and a storage pouch. This pouch isn't rechargeable, but it does protect your toothbrush and brush attachments on the go. The basic models also have a charging dock, but they don't include an adapter. So these charging docks only have a USB output that you connect to your own adapter.

Conclusion

Want to brush without any worries? The Philips Sonicare Prestige with SenseIQ technology is the right choice for you. The toothbrush sets the brushing mode itself, guides you with the pressure sensor and scrubbing sensor, and provides useful tips. Want to receive feedback on your brushing session and always determine the brushing mode yourself, go for the DiamondClean Smart or DiamondClean. If the most important thing for you is to brush your teeth more efficiently than with a manual toothbrush, the ProtectiveClean series will do.
