What's Matter?
Matter is a universal language you can use to have smart products from different brands work together. Currently, smart products still work with multiple protocols like Bluetooth, Thread, Zigbee, or other protocols. Your Thread sensor isn't able to turn on Zigbee lights, for example. Soon, you can use a Matter app to connect these products to each other. Your sensor will then transmit a signal to the Matter app via a hub. Matter then forwards the signal to your smart light via a different hub. As a result, everything is connected.
Which devices work with Matter?
A device has to meet 3 requirements. The product has to support IPv6. All smart products manufactured after 2011 support this. In addition, the product has to work with an existing protocol like Bluetooth, WiFi, or Thread. The brand also has to allow the product to work with Matter. Brands like Google, Samsung, Apple, Eve, Netatmo, and Signify have already promised to work with Matter.
When will Matter be released?
Matter will be released in the fall of 2022. It was supposed to be released sooner, but many smart home brands wanted time to prepare for the release. Matter was supposed to be released in 2019, then 2020, and now in the fall of 2022.
How do you know if your smart product works with Matter?
We don't know which existing products will work with Matter. Brands like Signify, Eve, and NanoLead did already promise that products that have already been sold will work with Matter. You'll be able to use Matter after updating your product. You can recognize new smart home products that work with Matter by the Matter logo on the packaging.
Is Matter secure?
Each extra connection between products is potentially threatens the security of your data. Luckily, Matter data is well-secured with an AES encryption. This encryption secures your information on each device in your network separately. As a result, every task you submit is very well secured.
