What type of lens do I use for street photography?

You want to specialize in street photography. Finding a suitable lens is the first step. After all, not all lenses are suitable to capture life in public places. Below, you'll find 3 types of lenses for street photography that you can go all out with.

Prime lens

Prime lens

A lot of photographers swear by a prime lens. This is a lens with a fixed focal length, which has a lot of advantages. First of all, these lenses have a large maximum aperture. This means you can still take good photos in low light and you can create a small depth of field. Prime lenses are compact and lightweight, so you won't attract as much attention as a street photographer. You also have more freedom of movement. A 55 or 35mm prime lens is a good choice for street photography.

All-round zoom lens

All-round zoom lens

As described above, a 35 or 50mm focal length is deal for street photography. With this, you can take beautiful portraits of people on the street. If you also want to explore other types of photography, use an all-round zoom lens. A 24-70mm lens, for example. This allows you to take wide-angle as well as portrait photos. Most advanced all-round zoom lenses have a large maximum aperture, which makes for beautiful portraits. Keep in mind that zoom lenses are usually a bit heavier.

Wide-angle lens

Wide-angle lens

It depends entirely on your style as a street photographer, but a wide-angle lens is great for street photography. If you have an APS-C image sensor, choose a focal length of 24mm or smaller. A 16mm lens gives you a very wide image angle. It allows you to capture a complete urban setting in one photo. With wide-angle lenses, you can choose a zoom lens or a prime lens. Have a big budget? Choose a versatile, lightweight wide-angle lens with zoom.
