How do you choose a QHD gaming monitor?

QHD or Quad HD is 2 times sharper than Full HD. You can experience razor-sharp landscapes and scenes in your game look lifelike. You can enjoy a QHD monitor better on larger screen size, such as 27 inches. We'll explain how to choose a QHD monitor, which hardware you need, and which connector your monitor should have.

Choose a QHD gaming monitor

Choose a 1440-pixel gaming monitor

With a QHD monitor, you can game in QHD or Full HD resolution. Even if you still game in Gull HD, it's good to choose a QHD monitor. More and more games support QHD and video cards are becoming more powerful as well. This makes a QHD monitor a future-proof choice. We'll ask you the following questions:

  • Which screen size do you want?
  • Which refresh rate do you want?
  • What hardware do you have?
  • Which connectors should the monitor have?

What screen size do you want?

A Full HD monitor has 1920x1080 pixels, while QHD has 2560x1440 pixels. That's 2 times as many pixels. On very small screens, you won't notice this difference. But on 24, 27, or even 32-inch monitors, the image looks much sharper. Want to game on your desktop or laptop with a large screen? Choose a 27-inch monitor for an optimal balance between resolution and screen space. Want to game on the coach? Choose at least 32 inches.

What refresh rate do you want?

Gaming in Quad HD resolution with a high refresh rate is amazing. Characters and landscapes are razor-sharp and movements look smooth. The smooth images are mostly an advantage in fast games like shooters and racing games. The higher the refresh rate, the more powerful the video card should be. Don't have a high-grade video card? Choose a 144Hz QHD monitor to switch between Full HD with 144 fps and QHD with 60 fps.

What hardware do you have?

Which PC do you need for 1440 pixels?

In addition to the monitor, the video card also determines which resolution is displayed. QHD requires a pretty powerful video card, such as an NVIDIA GeForce RTX model. If you have a basic video card, choose a Full HD monitor. If you have a high-end model, choose a 4K monitor. The hardware you have determines this. Your video card produces a certain number of frames per second, such as 120 fps. In this case, a 60Hz monitor won't do you any good. In this case, it's better to choose a 120Hz monitor.

Which connectors should the monitor have?

DisplayPort vs HDMI for 1440-pixel QHD gaming

The connector of your monitor could be a bottleneck for your image quality, so make sure to choose the right one. A DisplayPort connector is the most suitable option to transmit a QHD signal from your computer to your monitor. Do make sure that the connector on your monitor, the connector on your computer, and your DisplayPort cable are all at least the 1.2 version. Prefer HDMI? You need at least the 1.4 version for up to 75 fps, and at least HDMI 2.0 for up to 144 fps.
